Open-pit mining, also known as opencut mining or opencast mining, is a method of surface mining that is used for extracting rocks and minerals. It necessitates the use of extensive machinery. South Africa boasts several of the largest open pit mines worldwide.

South Africa’s Biggest Opencast Mines

Venetia Diamond Mine

The Venetia Diamond Mine, which has been operational since 1992, is situated in the Limpopo Province near the town of Alldays, within the Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve.

The mine is part of De Beers' portfolio of diamond operations in South Africa and holds the distinction of being the country's leading diamond producer. The excavation has reached a depth of 450 metres.

Jagersfontein Mine

One of the world's oldest diamond mining settlements is Jagersfontein, a small town in the Free State. The first diamonds were found in the region around 1870. Surprisingly, the world's deepest hand-excavated hole is believed to be 275 metres in the Jagersfontein Mine's hand-dug section.

Cullinan Diamond Mine

Established in 1902, the Cullinan Diamond Mine in Gauteng is also known as the Premier Mine. Significant gem-quality diamonds, including the largest raw diamond ever discovered and the two largest diamonds in the British Crown Jewels, have been mined from this renowned mine.

Shishen Mine

Located 30 kilometres from Kathu in the Northern Cape, the Shishen Mine is an iron mine that is 400 metres deep. The mine has been running continuously since 1953. Sishen now has one of the world's biggest reserves of iron ore.

Grootegeluk Mine

The Grootegeluk Mine, situated in Limpopo and under the ownership of Exxaro, boasts the world's largest beneficiation facility. The mine utilizes traditional truck and shovel operations to produce around 18.8 million tonnes of coal annually.
